Weather
Few things are as important to the pilot as weather. Here's a collection of
weather links that I use often.
-
Nav Canada Aviation Weather Site
- The official source of weather and NOTAM information for pilots flying
in Canada.
-
Nav Canada VFR/IFR Flight Conditions Overview
- A pictorial overview of Canada, with icons showing where conditions are
(or forecast to be) VFR, MVFR, and IFR.
-
US Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS)
- The US National Weather Service's site for aviation weather. Below are
direct links to the ADDS weather charts that I consult most often.
-
Jeppesen
- Jeppesen has a few useful weather charts freely available, for the US,
Canada, Mexico, and Europe. You'll have to click the weather map on their
home page, since their site's terms of use don't allow me to provide
direct links.
Suggested Reading
Here are links to some of my favorite aviation sites.
-
The Finer Points
- A weekly podcast by CFI Jason Miller, a growing discussion forum, and a
photo gallery for aviators. I listen to Jason's podcasts on my PDA
through the car stereo during my daily commute.
-
AVweb - An excellent
on-line aviation news site, updated at least twice weekly. "Say Again",
"CEO of the Cockpit", and "Probable Cause" are my favorite regular
columns, and I always check out "Picture of the Week" and "Short Final".
-
See How It Flies - This
is a combination flight training and aerodynamics manual. I first read
this when learning to fly R/C, and now check back regularly to brush up
on flight concepts and techniques.
-
Cockpit GPS - A
pilot's guide to using GPS in the cockpit. This guide is targeted to both
VFR and IFR aviators, using everything from a handheld non-aviation GPS
to high-end panel mounted systems.
-
Flight Safety Foundation
- A great resource for the safety conscious (which we all are) aviator.
Lots of articles examining various risks, human factors issues, and more
related to flying safely. Highly recommended! Requires a subscription
(free, with no junk mail).
